Blake and I headed up into the mountains yesterday to make the most of a glorious spring day, which was cool and illuminated by a beautful, flooding sunlight. At this time of year, there is still significant variation in the progression of the spring forests from the valleys to the summits, often with a temperature differential of from 5 to 10 degrees. Down on Gandy Creek, the fly fisherman were out in force after a trout stocking, but Blake's fly-fishing gear is out of commission right now, so he could only watch in envy. He's a great salamander hunter, however, and he did catch a gorgeous northern two-lined salamader (Eurycea bislineata), which reaches its southern-most range around these parts.

The Priory of the Orange Tree - Samantha Shannon (wlw, high fantasy, cool worldbuilding, kinda reminds me of LOTR but with more dragons and feminism and lesbians)

Even Though I Knew The End - C.L. Polk (wlw, supernatural noir, cool 1930s detective story with angels & demons, I loved this one!)

This Is How You Lose The Time War - Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone (wlw, sci-fi, very cool time travel stuff!! and very beautiful, it felt like reading poetry most of the time)

One Last Stop - Casey McQuinston (wlw, background trans & pan & queer characters, sci-fi or fantasy idk, but time travel, I loooved this book, great)

Carry On - Rainbow Rowell (mlm, background wlw in the third book, fantasy, it's a trilogy, basically Harry Potter if it was gay and also better)

Silver In The Wood - Emily Tesh (mlm, fantasy, very pretty, lots of fae stuff and lovely descriptions, it has a really good sequel too)

Pretty much anything by Alice Oseman (all cute and lovely and great, though I've only read Radio Silence so far I hear only good things, Solitaire is on my to-read list)

I Kissed Shara Wheeler - Casey McQuinston (wlw, fiction, it's been a while but I liked this book)

The Falling In Love Montage - Ciara Smyth (wlw, fiction, this book was so cute and funny and deeply emotional it made me Feel way too many things, I'd definitely recommend it)

What Big Teeth - Rose Szabo (a bit of queerness all around, fantasy, werewolves and monsters, this one was pretty cool!, lots of original ideas for the world/character building)

His Quiet Agent - Ada Maria Soto (mlm, asexual, fiction, about like spies but this book was so gentle and sweet I wanted to cry in the best way possible)

Some By Virtue Fall - Alexandra Rowland (wlw, historical fiction(?), theatre drama!! rival romance!! duels!!, a very good read in general)

Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend - Emma R. Alban (wlw, historical fiction, I’m not usually one for regency romances, but I really liked this!!, very cute and lots of drama, and there’s a sequel coming out soon!)

Okay I gotta talk about The Forest House and how big it is, because damn.

“The residence of the High Lord of the Autumn Court and his court. It's located at the center of the Autumn Court is a sprawling complex, and has been built in and around the trees and rocks, with only its uppermost levels visible above the ground. Below, it tunnels a few levels into the stone. Its sprawl generates its size; it is possible to walk from one end of the House to the other, though it would take half the morning. There are layers and circles of sentries ringing it; in the trees, on the ground, atop the moss-coated shingles, and the stones of the House itself. No enemies approached Beron’s home without his knowledge. None left without his permission.”

We get this pretty detailed description of the Forest House and something that always amazed me was how Lucien says "It is possible to walk from one end of the House to the other, though it would take half the morning."

I think I might take that part too literally but bro. We can assume "half the morning" means a few hours, maybe three or four depending on what you consider morning. I'll say three hours because I consider "morning" as sunrise to noon.

And do you know how far an average person can walk in 3 hours? Twelve miles. So bro, based on that sentence I headcanon the Forest House to be 12 miles long and it might be a little smaller because it wouldn't be a straight walk but jesus christttt that's just so cool idk. I wish we could get more of the Forest House in canon because 😩 it's just so FAE! Straightup Middle-earth stuff, I love it. But she probably won't write the Forest House so I'm happy with fanfic.
